The repeated farewell to his mother in the stirring days after her death is Gian-Marco "Gimma" Schmid's focus in his ruthless but sensitive autobiographical novella.
Between a declaration of love and a balance, »Farewells to Mother« tries to grasp the incomprehensible. Schmid chooses the form of a meticulous diary as well as flashbacks to striking moments between his mother and him. Unembellished, he shows how a naïve love as a child at some point only remains the sheer horror and anger that there is no weapon against the overpowering opponent alcohol.
"Farewells to Mother" is a rare, authentic insight into a family on the verge of social neglect, a strong literary text and perhaps most of all a plea against addiction.
