The year is 1976. It has been three years since General Pinochet became head of state in a coup and established a brutal military dictatorship in Chile. 50-year-old Carmen leads a middle-class life in the capital Santiago with her husband Miguel and their grown-up children. Husband Miguel is a successful, respected doctor.
Actually, she also wanted to study medicine, but this was not appropriate for a woman. So she takes care of the household and is involved in charitable projects in the church. Politics is not talked about in the family and in the circle of friends. They have arranged themselves relatively well.
Although Carmen seems to lead a regular life, a discomfort is noticeable. Carmen makes her way to the winter house by the sea to supervise its renovation and have time for herself. Her husband, children and grandchildren come by during the winter holiday. When the priest asks her to take care of a young man whom he secretly hosts, Carmen breaks new ground, away from the quiet life she is used to. The actress Manuela Martelli, who thrilled in Machuca in 2004, has shot in her feature film debut an extremely densely designed, carefully narrated and filmed mood picture from a country where people have to live under a dictatorship and never know for a moment who they can trust and who they cannot.
