PianoWe each listen to a piece by the three French-speaking composers Ernest Bloch, Frank Martin and César Franck, all of whom have also dedicated themselves to sacred music.
Bloch and Martin were born in Geneva, Franck in Liège.
Bloch wrote "Nigun" ('melody', traditionally an improvised song) as the second piece of his triptych Baal Shem. It has the mood of a prayer.
Franck and Martin were fascinated by the old style and counterpoint. Despite their formal strictness, her sonatas bear witness to their own tonal language. With Martin, joy of playing and seriousness meet, with Franck the sky opens.
