It is a dark, almost forgotten chapter of Swiss migration policy:
Until 2002, between 15,000 and 50,000 children of seasonal workers had to live underground in Switzerland, depending on the estimate. Because guest workers were not allowed to join their families in the first few years, but could not stand the separation, many of them brought their children to live with them in secret. They lived in hiding, had to stay inside while their peers played outside, were not allowed to go to school - and had no health insurance. It was not uncommon for the aliens police to become aware of such children through tips from the neighborhood, which could result in their expulsion from the country.
According to the latest calculations, around 500,000 other seasonal children were placed with relatives in their countries of origin or with foster families in Switzerland and in homes in Italy near the border. For many of those affected - children and parents - the isolation and separation was a traumatic experience, which they did not talk about for a long time and which put a great strain on the relationship in the families.
