Joachim grows up on the grounds of the largest psychiatric clinic in Schleswig-Holstein, not because he is a patient himself, but because his father director Meyerhoff (Devid Striesow) runs the clinic. He has a great dedication to his work and the young patients, and for Joachim, too, they are part of the family. As the youngest son of the director, he often seeks refuge with them, because his older brothers like to annoy him to the point of raging. The mother of the three boys (Laura Tonke) paints watercolors and longs to get away from the energy-sapping everyday life and towards balmy summer nights in Italy. Meanwhile, outside of his work in the reading chair, the director also dives into other worlds and secretly goes his own way behind his wife's back. The perfect family life seems to be cracking and as Joachim slowly grows up, the loss of his first love also makes it difficult for him.
