Rome, 1980: After serving a short prison sentence, the struggling writer Goliarda Sapienza continues to meet with the women she met behind bars. She even develops a close friendship with the young offender Roberta. Through this, Goliarda regains her zest for life and her inspiration to write.

This unconventional biopic intertwines the author’s life with fictional elements from her books. With an episodic, associative structure, the film follows the encounters between the two women as they meet in bars or embark on spontaneous strolls through Rome together. With each encounter, the film reveals more of the story and explores the evolving relationship between the two women, which oscillates between friendship and fascination.

The Italian writer Goliarda Sapienza (1924–1996) only became known posthumously. Her now-famous novel *The Art of Joy* (*L’arte della gioia*) was not published during her lifetime and was not made public until 2008. Her two works were inspired by her experience of imprisonment in the 1980s: *Days in Rebibbia* (*L’università di Rebibbia*) and *The Certainties of Doubt* (*Le certezze del dubbio*), in which Goliarda describes the conditions of her imprisonment and reflects on the role of prison in contemporary societies. In them, she argues that while incarceration represents the most extreme form of punishment within the penal system, outside (“fuori”) there exist more subtle, intricate, and no less dangerous restrictions on freedom; thus, the film also addresses social inequalities and restrictive gender roles.

Mario Martone (“Nostalgia”) shot “Fuori” at Sapienza’s home and featured, among others, real inmates from Rebibbia Prison. The film premiered at the Cannes International Film Festival.
