Lena, an optimistic college student, takes on a writing class—her only student is Hugo Drowak, a bitter, hard-drinking misanthrope. He once wrote love poems with great passion, until a heartbreak drove him into alcohol and isolation. Despite his nastiness, Lena doesn’t give up: she firmly believes that everyone deserves a second chance and tries to rekindle Hugo’s creativity.
