Magnús is a fisherman who is often out at sea for weeks at a time. Anna is an artist hoping to exhibit her work in a gallery soon. The two recently broke up. He has moved out. She has stayed in their secluded house near the Icelandic coast, along with their children and the family dog. But Anna and Magnús can’t quite manage to untangle their lives. Is it because of the children—or is there perhaps still a form of love between them that refuses to fade?

“The Love That Remains” by award-winning Icelandic director Hlynur Pálmason celebrates the wondrous magic of everyday life and finds deep truths about life within it. His film is a blend of realistic scenes and surprising, often dreamlike and whimsical moments. Iceland’s breathtaking nature is not only beautifully captured, but also reflects the characters—who are rough and gentle, warm and cold, funny and serious.
