They are the prime example of a tone poem and at the same time Modest Mussorgsky's masterpiece: the colourful "Pictures at an Exhibition", in which he describes the paintings and drawings of his friend Viktor Hartmann, who had died shortly before.

Originally conceived as an extremely demanding piano cycle, the richness of the timbres inspired other composers early on to arrange the work for new instrumentations. This is also the case with Maurice Ravel – who wrote the well-known arrangement for large orchestra – or Andreas N. Tarkmann, whose version for winds and double bass will be heard. The German composer and arranger, who can look back on many years of collaboration with the Kammerphilharmonie, has also arranged the virtuoso Five Pieces by Jean Françaix for solo cello and wind ensemble. Equally easy to dance is the Petite Suite Gauloise from the pen of Louis Théodore Gouvy, which is based on the Baroque suite as a series of dances.
