Via Engiadina: Hiking without luggage

A challenging high-altitude hike from Lavin or Guarda to Ardez along the Via Engiadina. Through forests, alpine pastures, and mountain huts with impressive views of Piz Linard and Val Lavinouz to the “Schellenursli” village of Guarda and on to the mountaineering village of Ardez.

Zernez offers some very interesting sights, including the Protestant parish church and the National Park visitor centre, which houses extensive permanent and temporary exhibitions, the visitor information office and a souvenir shop.

Susch presents itself as a magnificent Engadine village with its many "old" houses. Susch is the only place in the Lower Engadine where the Inn River flows through the middle of the village and, together with the Flüela Pass and the Vereina Tunnel, forms the only traffic junction to the northwest.

Lavin lies at the southern portal of the Vereina Tunnel and is situated between Susch and Guarda on the valley floor. The Protestant church of San Güerg is particularly worth seeing.

Guarda is considered one of the best-preserved Engadine villages. Because of the magnificent, sgraffito-decorated Engadine houses, it was classified as a townscape of national importance by the Swiss Heritage Society. Guarda is also known for the world-famous children's book story of Schellen-Ursli.

Like Guarda and Susch, Ardez is a typical Engadine village. Worth seeing are the Protestant church, the only Renaissance church in the Engadine, the Plantaturm and the Steinsberg castle ruins, which are open to the public.

The alpine farm is known for its Tyrolean specialities. The alp is only operated in summer.

Ftan is situated on a sun-drenched high plateau, away from the hustle and bustle, and is divided into the two districts of Ftan Pitschen and Ftan Grond (small and large). Visit the old mill of Ftan. There are two mills in the building in their original state.

As a landmark of the Lower Engadine, Tarasp Castle, built in 1040, majestically overlooks the region. Since 30 March 2016, the world-famous Engadine artist Not Vital has been the new owner of Tarasp Castle. There are regular castle and art tours.

Scuol became famous for its more than 20 mineral springs, which rise over a distance of only 6 km in and around Scuol. It is worth visiting the authentic village squares with their mineral water fountains and the Engadine houses in the two old parts of the village, Scuol Sot (lower village) and Scuol Sura (upper village), which are characterised by Romanesque culture.

In the village of Sent, for example, you can discover the «Grotta da Cultura» meeting centre with its varied cultural programme and the mystical old Val Sinestra spa house. Sent can be recognised from afar by its neo-Gothic church tower built in 1899.

In the former spa buildings, the simple Berghaus and the imposing Hotel Val Sinestra, you can still sense a breath of times gone by. The castle-like spa hotel «Val Sinestra» was built over 100 years ago.

Tschlin is situated on a terrace high above the valley. Worth seeing are the brewery, where the local Tschlin beer is produced, and the village cheese dairy.

In the 9th century AD, the historic site was the court or mall for the region of Lower Engadine, Nauders and Pfunds. Over the centuries, the fortress was repeatedly the scene of important historical events and was a toll and customs station.
