WELTFILMTAGE: - MY SUNSHINE - With Japanese dinner!
Japan 2024 / Director: Hiroshi Okuyama

A beguilingly filmed melancholy dance of emotions on ice: in his wonderful winter film, Japanese director Hiroshi Okuyama tells the story of three people who come very close to each other in a moment of pure happiness.

Takuya lives on an island in Japan. The dreamy and reserved boy plays baseball in summer and ice hockey in winter, neither of which he is particularly good at, but he doesn't mind. During ice hockey training, he observes the talented figure skater Sakura practising and is fascinated by her elegance. From then on, he starts practicing pirouettes himself and is observed by Arakawa, a former figure skating star. He takes Takuya under his wing and practices with him. When he makes rapid progress, the coach suggests that they try pair skating. From then on, the three train together a lot and grow into a really good team - until the ice begins to melt between them in spring.

The quietly told story of outsiders going through a common development is entertaining, sometimes funny, sometimes sad, but always reserved and quiet. For a long time, "My Sunshine" reads as a feel-good movie. In the encounters between the two, or three, or four people, real friendships blossom, happiness spreads and life is created. Everything we learn about the characters consists of subtle statements, indirect allusions: Glances, gestures, short casual remarks, which gives the movie its charm.
