Works by Antonio Caldara (1670–1736): Trio sonatas from Opus 1 and 2, chamber cantatas and arias, including Mary Magdalene's poignant aria "Pompe inutili – Useless Splendour".

Antonio Caldara (1670–1736), Venetian composer and cellist, achieved great fame during his lifetime as vice-kapellmeister of the Vienna Court Orchestra. Klingzeug, on the other hand, devotes himself in this program to compositions by the young Caldara, written during the time when he was still living in Italy. Refined and innovative trio sonatas from Opus 1 and 2 as well as chamber cantatas and arias from the same creative period can be heard.

These works are about grand gestures and the most diverse forms of love. In the aria "Pompe inutili – Useless Splendour", which gives the programme its name, Mary Magdalene asserts that she will let go of all earthly things and all human desires in order to achieve the purity demanded by God.

The cantatas revolve around the stuff that good soap operas are made of: unfulfilled love, languishing pain and blazing jealousy.

klingzeug was founded in Innsbruck in 2011 to create an experimental field for early music. Since then, programmes have been created for a wide variety of instrumentations. With openness and curiosity for the art of the past, but always with an ear for the present, the ensemble dedicates itself to the most diverse aspects of Baroque music. In the performances, which are sometimes steered in unusual directions, a coherent dramaturgy plays just as important a role as the making of rarely performed music from the 16th to 18th centuries sound. Interdisciplinary projects, the use of unusual places and the acquisition of a new audience are a matter close to the heart of the ensemble.

So far, klingzeug has been a regular guest at the Innsbruck Festival of Early Music, as part of the musik+ concert series, at Jeunesse Austria and the Tyrolean Baroque Days, among others. Concerts at the Austrian Cultural Forum in London, at the Liechtenstein Guitar Days LIGITA and at the Caldaro Organ Autumn have also made klingzeug known abroad.

The musicians of klingzeug studied historical performance practice at the Royal Academy of Music in London, the University of the Arts in Berlin, the University of Music and Theatre in Munich and the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis. They play in ensembles such as the Orchestra of The Age of Enlightenment, the Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin, the European Union Baroque Orchestra, the Accademia Montis Regalis, the Vocal Academy Berlin, Concerto Stella Matutina and others, and have performed under conductors such as Sir John Eliot Gardiner, René Jacobs and Attilio Cremonesi.
