Nationalpark: Munt la Schera – Vom Gletscher geformt

A varied and panoramic circular hike. Along the route, highlights await you such as the old mine tunnels above Buffalora, the earth currents at Munt Chavagl or the view from Munt la Schera, which extends far into the neighbouring Italian Stelvio National Park. In addition, an impressive variety of alpine flowers attracts visitors, especially in early summer. Even edelweiss can be found in large quantities at Munt la Schera. Depending on your mood and condition, the hike can be undertaken with or without climbing the summit.

From the Postbus stop at the Wegerhaus Buffalora (1968 m above sea level.M.), the route starts with a crossing of the stream bed of the Ova dal Fuorn. Through a beautiful moor we go to Alp Buffalora. Then on a wide path steeply through an old pine stand to the fork in the road on Alp Marangun (2195 m above sea level.M.). The way south would be via Jufplaun into the Val Mora and on to Sta. Maria in Val Müstair.
The route to Munt la Schera, on the other hand, turns west and climbs slightly along the northern flank of Munt Buffalora. After a short time, a tunnel entrance right next to the path testifies to the medieval iron ore mining in this area. The path continues to climb and crosses the border to the national park on a small saddle (2378 m above sea.M level).
From the Munt Chavagl, streams of earth flow to the valley at this point, which look like a pour on a cake. After a short stretch of the path with a beautiful view of the Val Chaschabella and the Italian Stelvio National Park, there is a fork in the road (2370 m above sea.M level), where the decision is made whether the Munt la Schera should be climbed.
Hikers who do not climb continue straight west on a flat path and later meet the path that leads down from the summit.
The path towards the summit, on the other hand, leads uphill on the southeastern edge and after reaching the altitude on the long ridge of the Munt la Schera to the summit (2586 m above sea level.M.). The descent leads through flower-rich meadows and past a small melt and rainwater pond down to the path that leads around the Munt la Schera.
Back at the base of the hill we go through the first pine stands and down along heavily eroded backrests. Shortly after immersion in the first larch stands, the large clearing of Alp la Schera (2091 m above sea.M level) opens up with its distinctive warehouse corridor and the old alpine hut, which today serves as a refuge for park rangers.
After the alpine hut, the route turns north, and leads through a varied mixed forest quickly downhill against the Ofenberggut. At car park 5, the path crosses the Ofen Pass road, turns east and after a short time reaches the Postbus stop Il Fuorn (P6) (1794 m above sea.M level) and the Hotel Parc Naziunal Il Fuorn.
