They enjoy cult status in their homeland. Their music stands for the pulsating life of Cuba, for the longings and desires of the people there. With songs such as 'Chan Clian' or 'Dos Gardenias', they move and inspire entire generations far beyond the borders of Cuba. The album 'BUENA VISTA SOCIAL CLUB' became an international surprise hit and was awarded a Grammy. Since its first release, it has sold more than three million copies worldwide.

It all began in 1996 when the well-known world musician and composer Ry Cooder traveled to Havana to record a record with Cuban musicians. He sought out and found some of the legendary soneros of the 30s, 40s and 50s. Among them were idols such as Compay Segundo (vocals, guitar), Ruben Gonzalez (piano), Ibrahim Ferrer (baritone), Omara Portuondo (vocals) and Eliades Ochoa (guitar). Together they form a unique music project: BUENA VISTA SOCIAL CLUB.

Wim Wenders was also infected by the worldwide euphoria that erupted after the release of the album. He accompanied his long-time friend and companion Ry Cooder with a small film team to recording sessions in Havana and immersed himself in the world of Cuban son music. The result is a unique music film in which he creates a cinematic monument to the legendary Soneros and their music. BUENA VISTA SOCIAL CLUB had its world premiere in the out-of-competition section of the 1999 Berlinale.
