The programme includes two works of great expressiveness: Bedřich Smetana's First String Quartet and Edvard Grieg's String Quartet in G minor op. 27.

Bedřich Smetana's First String Quartet is deeply personal, autobiographical confessional music. In four movements, the composer describes his artistic rise, his passion for music and finally the tragic stroke of fate of his sudden deafness. The work begins with passionate drama, unfolds folksy dancing joy in the middle part and ends with a harrowing finale in which the high "whistling" E symbolises approaching deafness.

Edvard Grieg's String Quartet in G minor op. 27 combines Nordic timbres with great emotional intensity. Powerful rhythms, wide-ranging melodies and echoes of Norwegian folk music give the work a fresh, natural mood. Between dramatic energy and lyrical passages, a quartet full of passion, poetry and scenic expanse emerges.

Quartet

Four musician friends from the Swiss scene have come together in the QuARTett: the violinist Flurina Sarott, who lives in Scuol, her husband Paul Scharf (violin/viola), the cellist Joël Marosi and his partner, the violinist Teodora Dimitrova. They are active in chamber music, at conservatories or universities as well as in leading Swiss orchestras.
