Trio Battida
It all started with the idea of combining the grand piano with percussion to add an exciting rhythmic and tonal component to the sound of the piano. Almost three years ago, the three musicians founded the Trio Battida. The name comes from Rhaeto-Romanic and means something like "beat", in reference to the many wooden plates of the marimba and keys on the grand piano that are struck.
To the concert program
All works performed are own arrangements by Matthias Roth and Luca Staffelbach. The search for suitable literature for this instrumentation led the trio again and again to ballet music from the East: they are fascinated by the complexity of these orchestral works, by their tonal and rhythmic facets. Thus, ballet music forms the center of the program. However, there are also works that are out of line in terms of style and era. However, all arrangements have one thing in common: they are characterized by passion, virtuosity, tonal diversity and wit.
After the virtuoso opening with Danse infernale by Igor Stravinsky and the poetic Hungarian Dances by Bartók, 4 numbers from Prokofiev's ballet Romeo and Juliet will be heard as the centre of the programme. With three movements from the Suite for Variety Orchestra by Dmitri Shostakovich, the audience is whisked away to the colourful variety theatre. As a supplement to the virtuoso orchestral works from the East, the Trio Battida plays three tangos by Astor Piazzolla. The pieces, which are world-famous as Tango nuevo, combine traditional Argentine tango with elements from classical music and jazz.
