Schellen-Ursli returns to the Engadin as an opera

In addition to the well-known book and the more recent film, Schellen-Ursli now takes the stage in operatic form. This time, he’s not alone in the spotlight – Flurina shares the main role. In the opera, she even takes part in the Chalandamarz parade with a Plumpa – something unthinkable in Ursli’s real homeland. Composer Marius Felix Lange based the opera not only on the Schellen-Ursli book but also on the entire trilogy, which includes «Flurina und das Wildvögelein» and «Der grosse Schnee».
This summer, Opera Engiadina will tour the Engadin with this piece, which was originally written for Theater Basel.

The two child leads are played by a sibling pair from Pontresina and by Chiara Staub and Ambra Fanchi from Sent. Even Marietta Könz, the great-granddaughter of Schellen-Ursli author Selina Chönz, joins the cast. She appears as one of the eleven children who form part of the «Wetterbaum-Quartett» and take on roles as companions and animals.
The roles of mother Madlaina and father Andri are sung by Gianna Lunardi and Chasper-Curò Mani. The dual role of Uncle Gian and the personified Winter is performed by Flurin Caduff – all three are well known in the Engadin. The visually rich production is directed by Zuoz native Riikka Läser.
