The Lower Engadine villages of Guarda, Ardez & Lavin and the Upper Vinschgau village of Mals have much in common - the Romansh language, the original mountain world, and now the first cross-border 60 km long multi-day route from mountaineering village to mountaineering village.

Description

Historically, the mountaineering villages are connected by language. Because the farming population of the Lower Engadine and Upper Vinschgau long spoke the same language: "Rumantsch." 5 stages between well-kept, quiet mountain villages at the foot of the mountain giants Piz Buin and Weißkugel, with overnight stays in three alpine club huts and relaxation by crystal-clear mountain lakes.

Attention: In 2025 the hike was adjusted due to the closure of the Sesvenna hut and is now bookable with 5 stages (the stage from Schlinig to Mals is covered by public bus and the overnight stay is in Mals).

Directions

The cross-border, approximately 60 km long multi-day route appeals to experienced hikers and can be planned individually or booked as a package. The 90 km refers to the entire route, including the section covered by bus. Three stages on the Swiss side lead from Guarda via the SAC hut Chamonna Tuoi, the mountain lake Lai Blau, and over the Fuorcla Sesvenna. On the South Tyrolean side, hikers proceed from the AVS Sesvenna hut in two more stages to the mountaineering village Mals, along the Matscher Ackerwaal to the AVS Oberettes hut.

Public Transport

  • By Rhaetian Railway (from Chur, Landquart/Prättigau, from Upper Engadine or Scuol) hourly to Guarda station, subsequent connection to Guarda station.

Arrival information

  • From the north: via Landquart – Klosters by car shuttle through the Vereina Tunnel (Selfranga - Sagliains) or over the Flüela Pass into the Lower Engadine on H27
  • From the east: via Landeck / Austria towards St. Moritz on H27
  • From the south: via Reschen Pass (Nauders-Martina) or Ofen Pass (Val Müstair-Zernez) on H27
  • Guarda is located directly on the Engadine road H27 between Lavin and Ardez
