Andrea, a provincial police officer, wants to end her unhappy marriage and take up a new job as a detective inspector in the city.
But after a birthday party, her husband-to-be runs drunk in front of her car on a lonely country road and is dead as a mouse. In shock, Andrea commits a hit-and-run. To her surprise, she learns that same night that the religion teacher and dry alcoholic Franz has called the police. He thinks he's the cause of the accident – as does the whole village, by the way. While Franz packs his suitcase for prison and staggers unerringly towards his downfall, Andrea tries to cover her tracks...
