INFORMATION ABOUT SONJA INDIN'S PROJECT "AND THEN SHE WROTE – POETRY GOES JAZZ"

In her new project, singer and composer Sonja Indin combines the power of poetry with the magic of jazz. Poignant poetry, beautiful melodies and fresh jazz interpretations.

Sonja Indin has added texts to selected instrumental jazz standards – including compositions by George Robert (1960–2016), the well-known saxophonist and founder of the Lausanne Jazz School. For the first time, texts have been added to his pieces. George Roberts' widow has given her permission to do so, because the texts may make the pieces more approachable.

Sonja Indin has also written a text for the standard "Renewal" by contemporary jazz musician Ralph Towner (USA, *1940), which reflects on the constant renewal in life.

"Recite your lines aloud, Ronsard advised, or, better yet, sing them." This is a piece of advice from the poet Clive James, which singer Sonja Indin has embraced: revive poetry through music and renew jazz music with a touch of poetry.

Based on the George Shearing standard (GB/USA 1919–2011) "And then I wrote", to which Sonja Indin wrote her own text, her current project is a tribute to women poets. Indin's lively words contrast with Shearing's cool vibe, creating a productive tension. "Speak your mind, speak it" – this is where Indin is at work, as a singer, composer and author.

The project has a female focus, with jazzy poetry interpretations by Dorothy Parker (1893–1967), Elma Mitchell (1919–2000), Michaela Morgan (contemporary English poet) and Elizabeth Jennings (1926–2001). In addition, compositions about motherhood and the "care taking role" have been created. "Femme phénoménale" is Indin's remarkable French reinterpretation of a famous sensual poem by Maya Angelou – a hymn to female empowerment.

And in "Expecting you – Accepting you", written for her unborn child, Indin merges the roles of mother and artist in a warm embrace: "I wrote a song about accepting you – no matter what you do."

BAND BIOGRAPHIES

Sonja Indin (*1980) completed her jazz vocal studies with Marianne Racine at the Zurich University of the Arts and successfully obtained her master's degree in the summer of 2010. She also spent one semester studying in Basel with Lisette Spinnler and one semester at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama with Nia Lynn. Master classes with Anita Wardell, Bobo Stenson and Quincy Jones in London as well as workshops with Sylvie Courvoisier, Jay Clayton, Sheila Jordan, Nils Petter Molvaer and a lieder course with Daniel Fueter have provided important musical impulses. In 2011 her debut CD was released by Brambus. In 2015, Sonja Indin successfully led the project "Eyes in the City" (Tucholsky homage) with a CD production of the same name. Sonja Inderbitzin is the mother of two children and teaches at the Zurich Conservatory of Music.

Fridolin Blumer (*1984) is a bassist, improviser and performer. He plays new and anachronistic music in a wide variety of bands and ensembles. In his musical work, what is hidden behind concepts, ideologies, styles or common listening expectations becomes audible. From 2003 to 2008 he studied jazz at the Basel University of Music and Performing Arts with Bänz Oester. Fridolin Blumer has been playing with Sonja Indin since 2009, and he also took part in the debut album "Do you know me" (Brambus).

During this time he played with Kurt Rosenwinkel, Roy Hargrove and Jason Moran, among others. Back in Switzerland, he was a sought-after drummer and composer in a wide variety of projects – from trio to big band. With his own formation «Peter's Playstation», which includes Andy Scherrer, Michael Zisman and Andi Pupato, he has played on numerous stages and has produced three CDs (TCB) so far. As a father of two children and in addition to his teaching activities, Peter Preibisch is active in various formations: Catmosphere, Beat Baumli's Special Edition, Julia Schiwowa, Sting Operation and since 2011 also in the Sonja Indin Band.
