A delicious porcini mushroom soup, chanterelle toast or truffle pasta – the culinary value of mushrooms is well known. But the mushroom kingdom has much more to offer and is seemingly full of contrasts: some are tasty and healthy, others deadly poisonous. Some are microscopic, others the size of several football fields. Some are monochromatic, others are colorful. After invertebrates, fungi are the most species-rich group on this earth. Their diversity is also reflected in the variety of functions they perform in our ecosystems.
