Description

One of the most famous and popular hiking routes in the Swiss National Park. It became famous above all because in the years 1991 to 2007 a total of 26 bearded vultures were released into the wild near the route in the Val da Stabelchod. In just over 3 hours, the hike allows an interesting cross-section through the Ofenpass forests and the flower-rich alpine pastures. The nature trail provides a lot of information in 5 languages.

Note: Dogs are not allowed in the Swiss National Park, not even on a leash. For more information and all protections, see nationalpark.ch/schutzbestimmungen.

Directions

The route starts at the Postbus stop Stabelchod (P8) (1886 m above sea.M level) on the Ofenpassstrasse. The path leads away from the road, upwards into a uniform mountain pine forest, which was radically cut down for the last time about 150 years ago. Past several clearings, the path reaches Alp Stabelchod. The former alpine hut serves as a base for park rangers and is not accessible to visitors.
From the alp, the route continues into the Val da Stabelchod, along the rushing stream and crosses it several times. The view widens more and more to the huge scree heaps and the pointed dolomite turts above the path and the rest area in the Val da Stabelchod. From the rest area, the slope increases and the path leads in a long zigzag past Edelweiss and gentian mats up to Margunet (2328 m above sea level.M), where an impressive panorama awaits.
After the highest point at the signpost, the path turns north and finally turns west into the Val dal Botsch, quickly losing altitude until the crossing of the Ova da Val dal Botsch. Here the path branches off towards Fuorcla Val dal Botsch and Val Mingèr (see route «Fuorcla Val dal Botsch»). Over huge debris cones, the path continues to the Rest area Val dal Botsch and into a beautiful mountain pine forest with dense ground vegetation.
At the former car park 7 (1876 m a.s..M.), the path reaches the Ofenpassstrasse (no Postbus stop!) and crosses the road to lead west towards Il Fuorn. From here, a short walk back to the starting point Stabelchod (P8) is also possible. Thus, the hike can be completed as a circular hike.
The last section to Il Fuorn is worth it, however, as the hike along the rushing Ova dal Fuorn, through a moist mixed forest of pines, spruces, larches and Swiss stone pines – a striking contrast to the dry mountain pine forest that has been hiked through so far. Vis-à-vis the forest fire area of 1951.M, the path reaches the edge of the Ofenberggut and thus the destination at the Postbus stop Il Fuorn (P6) (1794 m above sea level) and the Hotel Parc Naziunal Il Fuorn.
